C3760 Scalextric Volkswagon Panel Van – Type 1B

The Scalextric VW Panel Van, is a highly detailed 1/32nd scale, Ready to Run (RTR) slot car, with magnatraction, quick change braids and working lights. The car is also Digital Plug Ready (DPR) and is easily converted for use with the Scalextric Digital System in under sixty seconds using the C8515 Easy Fit Digital Plug.

History

The first generation of the Volkswagon Type 2 with the split windscreen, was officially known as the Transporter, Kombi , or Microbus, or informally called the Splitscreen or splittie and was produced from 1950 to 1967. This was the second car model from Volkswagon, where the first model, the Type 1 was the Beetle.
The first generation of the Type 2, with the split windscreen was called the T1, which used the 1100cc Volkswagon engine, 1131 cc, 24 bhp air cooled flat four cylinder boxer engine mounted in the rear.
The early versions of the T1 made until 1955 were called “barndoor”, and are now known as the T1a, due to its large rear engine cover. The Type 1b version such as the scalextric model has a modified body, smaller engine bay and 15” wheels instead of the original 16” wheels.

To ferry parts across the massive VW factory, stripped down Beetles were turned into "transporters". Ben Pon, a Dutch VW importer, thought this was a great idea and in 1947 sketched his idea of a Beetle based van. Two years later it was launched at the Geneva Motor Show as the modern equivalent to the horse and cart.
