A2026 Fly Porsche 924 GTP #3 USA – Le Mans 1980

The Fly Porsche 924 Carrera GT Turbo is a highly detailed 1/32nd scale, Ready to Run (RTR) Slot Car. This model features a Tuneable Chassis with Magnatraction, Height Adjustable Front Axle and Screw Mounted Front Guide. The Fly cars are highly detailed with quality paint finishes and sharp Tampo printing.

Note: In 2017 the “Falcon Slot” Company produced several versions of the Porsche 924. They released the, #4 German - Porsche 924 Carrera GTP, that competed in the 1980, 24Hr Le Mans. With an agreement with the now defunct” Falcon Slot” Company, Fly Model Car will release the #2 and #3 Sister Cars from the same team. The “Falcon Slot” company was created by the original founder of Fly.

History

In 1980 Porsche entered the Le Mans 24Hr with three examples of a new race car which were piloted by teams from Germany, USA and Great Britain. This new car was the 924 GTP, and each car raced under their national colours in the highly competitive 'Prototype' class, as the 924 GTP had not been homologated. And this meant the 924 GTP had to compete in the Prototype class against purpose built race cars with more than twice its horsepower. Inspite of this the Porsche 924 GTP’s still managed a creditable 6th, 12th and 13th place finishes in a very wet race. What worked in favour of the 924 GTP favour was its fine handling, reliability and economy, allowing the car to spend less time in the pits than any other car in the race.

The Porsche 924 GTP was based on the 210bhp 924 Carrera GT road car, with the legendary Norbert Singer, led team to race-prep and develop it, with mods including an aluminium roll cage, plastic panels, titanium springs and driveshafts, and a totally locked differential. This created a lot of grip with great handling. Box-section arch flares were fitted to accommodate the, 11-inch slicks on the front, and 12-inchers on the rear.
The 2.0-litre engine’s breathing was improved by relocating the turbocharger. New fuel injection and dry-sump lubrication was installed. Result? A leap in power to 320bhp at a screaming 7000rpm, plus a 40 per cent torque surge. The Brakes had to be taken from the 917 prototype. Meanwhile, the team’s body mods unlocked a 150kg weight cut, bringing the total down to just 930kg.
