Dick Johnson’s big break came when Queensland Ford dealer, Bryan Byrt chose Dick Johnson to race an XB Falcon GT in selected rounds of the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) and the Hardie-Ferodo 1000 at Bathurst. 1977 was Dick Johnsons 4th start in the Great Race, but the first time in a V8 Falcon. He managed to qualify 15th, but did not finish the race completing 124 out of the 163 laps.
