History
The Audi sport Quattro was the first rally car to take advantage of the rule changes, which allowed the use of four wheel drive in competition racing. The original Audi Quattro competition car debuted in 1980 initially as a development car, and then on a formal basis in the 1980 Janner Rally in Austria. The car was powered by an inline 5 Cylinder, 2.1 litre turbocharged engine which produced around 500bhp in completion trim.
The Audi Sport S1 E2 was introduced at the end of 1985 as an update to the Audi Sport Quattro. This car was powered by an inline 5 Cylinder, 2.1 litre turbocharged engine which produced in excess of 500bhp. The turbocharger featured a recirculating air system, which kept the turbo spinning at high rpm, when the driver closed the throttle, when backing off or changing gear, reducing turbo lag. This car also featured improved aerodynamics, in the form of wings and spoilers to improve downforce. The car proved highly successful in the hands of Walter Rohrl and Christian Geistdorfer, who won the 1985 San Remo Rally.
