History
The MG Metro 6R4 rally car, was created for Group B Rally. It is a 4 wheel drive, mid engine Rally car, powered by a 3.0 litre, V6 twin cam engine. This engine was not turbocharged like the majority of its competitors, and was initially unreliable due to teething problems. The MG Metro 6R4 was launched in 1985, and competed in Group B rallies, until halfway through the 1986 season, when Group B rally was banned, following a series of fatal accidents where drivers and spectators lost their lives.
The cars soon passed into private hands and used in rallycross. The Rothmans Racing Shell Oils, MG Metro 6R4 rally car, competed in the 1986 RAC Lombard Rally, driven by Jimmy McRrae.
He was a highly successful driver in the British Rally Championship, winning 5 times (1981,1982,1984,1987 and 1988). He is also the father of World Rally Championship driver Alister McRae and the late 1995 World Rally Champion Colin McRae.
