History

There were only 3 Falcon GT’s entered in the 1974 Bathurst Hardie Ferodo 1000, The Moffat car was painted dark blue with an Australian flag and Brut 33 in huge letters on the side.

The XB Ford Falcon GT was one of Allan Moffat’s most successful race cars. And was reputed to be one of the most expensive and publicised race cars developed for Bathurst at the time. The Ford works team withdrew from racing at the end of 1973, so Allan Moffat began to build the ultimate Falcon GT for Bathurst, the project was code-named Falcon B52. The Falcon GT and Allan’s crew went to the US to work with Kar Kraft and Goodyear, and did extensive testing in the USA and at Bathurst Australia, and became the favourite for the event.

At Bathurst the Ford Falcon GT suffered oil pressure problems during practice, and qualified a lowly 15th on the grid after an engine change. The car passed an inspection after the Holden Dealer Team put in a 15 point protest on the Number 33 Falcon GT, and was allowed to compete. During the race, after an excellent start, the car managed 4th place by the end of the first lap, but had to pit after 12 laps. The engine had developed a high-speed miss and was pitted to have the coil changed. A string of problems followed, including a broken distributor bearing, broken wheel bearing, brake pad problems and finally on lap 108, the clutch failed. The demanding Bathurst track finally took its toll on the car, and ended of one of the most expensive and glamorous attempts at winning the race.
